The Japanese Cultural Night (JCN) is an annual event that complements the Japanese Cultural Festival (JCF). Being one of the biggest events of the year for JSS, JCN will feature performances from NUS’ Japanese Performing Arts Groups, such as Buyo and Koto, as well as other talented individuals. Usually a night of music and performance that serves as a finale to the festival, JCN 2017 will be a step up from previous years, with two nights of wonderful performances -- not only from students within NUS, but also external performers. JCN’s aim over the years has always been to showcase both the traditional and modern aspects of Japan’s cultural arts. 2017 will be no different; with the theme of 絆 ’bonds’, JCN 2017 will feature the close bonds between these two seemingly conflicting yet synchronous aspects, and how these bonds shape the face of Japan’s cultural arts as we know today. Through traditional and modern performances over a wide range of genres, by both student bodies and external parties alike, the audience will be able to experience bonds they might not be able to experience anywhere else: the bonds between the performers and their art forms, the bonds between the performers and their audience, and not to mention, the bonds between the audience themselves and their friends as they sing and dance to the performances over the course of two nights. JCN 2017 will be a party of fun and zest, as we seek to introduce and encourage the appreciation of Japan’s unique cultural arts, through two nights of exciting performances!

Japanese Cultural Festival (JCF) is an annual event organized by the NUS Japanese Studies Society (JSS), which provides a platform for NUS students and the public to experience the different cultural aspects of Japanese life through a bazaar cum carnival. The theme for JCF 2017 is 絆 ‘bonds’. Aligned with this theme, our main aims are to raise awareness of Japanese culture to the students and the public, and to encourage bonding through Japanese-related goods, games and cultural experiences. By celebrating the different bonds present in life, we hope that the participants will appreciate their friends, families, mentors or colleagues who have played a part in their lives. During the festival, student organizations, including NUS JSS and NUS Comics and Animation Society, and external vendors will be invited to set up booths in University Town, providing a wide variety of activities and unique experiences to our target audience. Our festival booth activities include Japanese traditional games and sports, as well as the selling of Japanese-related items, ranging from tidbits to apparel and collectibles. JCF 2017 will be complemented by the Japanese Cultural Night (JCN) held in the evening, a concert showcasing the various performing arts in Japan. It is our hope that through the wide variety of activities and booths available during JCF and JCN 2017, our participants will be able to strengthen their existing bonds and perhaps even form new ones in the process.
